Suspense: The Summoner; A Dominic Grey Novel, by Layton Green

The Summoner, by Layton Green is an engaging thriller about a man named Dominic Grey who is working for the American Embassy in Zimbabwe. He finds himself investigating the disappearance of a retired head of Consular Affairs, William Addison. Aiding his efforts are Nya Mashumba, liaison for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Zimbabwe, and Professor Radek who specializes in religious, spiritual, or cult phenomena.

The trio get caught up in a dangerous pursuit of a man known as the N'anga, a religious leader of a Nigerian religion known as JuJu. Strange ceremonies leading to unexplained disappearances, and horrifying encounters lead Dominic and his troop through dark territories trying to unravel the mysteries of JuJu and the whereabouts of William Addison.

I really enjoyed this book. It explored regions of the world that I am unfamiliar with, had great detail, and delved into a realm of spiritual belief of which I was unaware. I cringed at certain parts of the book, as the description of what was taking place was just too awful to think. Yet, I had to know what would happen next.

The characters in the book needed a little more development, though I hope to learn more about them in the continuance of the series. The plot was well woven. There was nice build to the climax, and the ending was in keeping with the overall story. There were some minor technical difficulties, but not detrimental to the book as a whole.

On a scale of 1-4, I give this book a 3.5. It was well paced and exciting, as well as well fleshed out.
