Editing and Proofreading Services

Book Editing and Proofreading

I am a freelancer who is new to the field of copyediting. My previous educational background is outside of the literary scope, but I am currently pursuing some copyediting courses by Amy Einsohn, in addition to the many resources I have made myself familiar with. At this time, I offer proofreading and light copyediting services. Proofreading consists of checking for proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Copyediting (otherwise known as "line editing") requires proofreading as well as examination of continuity, style, voice, jargon, etc. Full copyediting also confirms sources, page numbers, titles and subtitles, and more. I offer light copyediting which does not include the latter services. These can be provided at an additional cost, however.

I use the Chicago Manual of Style, Grammatically Correct, and several other reference books and online sources. Each manuscript receives a thorough two passes for corrections and suggestions (more passes can be arranged at an additional cost). I use Word 2007 's "track changes" feature to highlight and make notations of changes necessary, or suggested, which you can implement or delete should you choose. If you prefer me to use a different style of editing, we can discuss that further.

I love the Oxford comma, but will respect the lack of it if that is what is in keeping with your general style. My goal is to maintain your voice and writing style, while bringing forth your story in a clear and concise manner to your readers.

For each new client, I am willing to edit one chapter for free as a "sample before you buy." If you like my editing style, and I feel that I can help you, we will move forward. If not, then no cost or risk to you.

Fees:
Prices are on a per project basis. Please email me with the details of your work (pages, words, timeline, etc.), and we can negotiate a price.

 Client Testimonials:

"Working with Angela Kay was one of the smartest decisions I made when finishing my last book. The rewrite phase of my first novel, Under the Wall, was a harried, hectic affair that could have really benefited from a second pair of eyes. When Angela broached the subject of working with her, I really took to it.

However, it wasn't until I got the first edited story from my collection back and saw the kinds of suggestions she had made, that I truly realized the help she was providing. All the missed punctuation, extra spaces, and funny misspellings like 'of' instead of 'off' aside, her input was invaluable to me to help root out inconsistencies of tone and style - issues that are key to any writer.

Her excellent ear for dialog made her an asset, and her suggestions were always helpful. I might not have always taken her suggestions word for word - though I usually did - but at the very least I took the spirit of her suggestions to heart. She helped me take away things that hurt the story and obscured my voice, and I really can't recommend her services enough.

She's funny and pleasant to work with too!"
