Paranormal/Urban Fantasy: Fire Baptized; Book One of the Habitat Series, by Kenya Wright

Fire Baptized, by Kenya Wright, is the first book in her upcoming Habitat Series. In this series, readers are taken to a time in which humans live with supernatural beings that they keep separated from their own existence in what is referred to as The Habitat.

In Fire Baptized, Lanore is a Mixbreed who has the ability to conjure up fire. Her roommate and lifelong friend, MeShack, is a being from the Were family who has an unquenchable libido. The duo find themselves, along with others, chasing a serial murderer while trying to stay safe. Sex, love, murder, and more have the characters running through the streets of the habitat in search of answers.

I really enjoyed this book. The plot was well developed, and the characters were varied. Since this is a series, it is assumed that the characters will gain more back story and depth in the future, but for a first book in a series, the characters had enough meat to sustain.

I liked the variation on a theme with the setting being a split world where non-humans are marked and separated from the rest of the world. I also liked the many different character types presented (Fairies, Weres of all kinds, Pixies, etc.). The imagery was also done nicely. Nice conceptualization.

*** Definitely an adult book with some graphic scenes and themes.

On a scale of 1-4, I give this book a 4. I really enjoyed it for a first in a series and hope to find out the rest of Lanore's story.
