Non-fiction: Last Bus Out; The True Story of Courtney Miles'..., by Beck McDowell

Last Bus Out; The True Story of Courtney Miles' Rescue of Over 300 People in Hurricane Katrina's Aftermath, is a book by Beck McDowell. It is the harrowing story of a teenage boy named Courtney Miles who is trying to better his life though the world around him keeps trying to bring him down. Then Hurricane Katrina hits and Courtney is faced with trying to flee Algiers. He makes a decision to commandeer a bus and eventually drives 300+ people to safety. The story then continues with Courtney and his struggles after the storm.

This book was an easy and fast paced read. However, when reading about Courtney, I did feel that it had a false feel to it, like there needed to be more depth. But in reading the author's afterword, I understood that the book was put together from a series of interviews over the course of two years, and that Courtney probably held back quite a bit. The writing itself, however, was done well, and the details of the horrors were brought to light vividly. The research that went into the book as a whole was also apparent.

There is no copyright or publisher's page in my edition, but according to Amazon.com, the publisher of this book is Kirkland & Fort.
ISBN: 9780615390345

On a scale of 1-4, I give this book a 3.5. While the story was well told, I just felt like something was missing.
